About Sikh Youth Australia

Sikh Youth Australia (Inspiring the Sikh Youth of Australia)

Over the past 17 years, SYA has been a progressive, national organisation enriching the lives of Australian Sikh youth and families by empowering Sikh youth, young adults and parents to understand and enjoy their identity and positively contribute to the social and economic development of Australia.

To empower Sikh youth, young adults and parents to understand and enjoy their identity and positively contribute to the social and economic development of Australia.

We aim to achieve this by:

  • Nurturing our Youth by providing a support network that cultivates an awareness and interest in their culture, identity, faith, and community.
  • Developing our Young Adults by enhancing their life and leadership skills within the context of their culture, identity, spirituality and as they continue their life journey into career, family and community involvement.
  • Assisting our Parents by helping them connect with youth and better understand contemporary youth issues while supporting the cultural, spiritual, and personal development of their families.
  • Continuously improving our programs, operations and management, ensuring that we consistently deliver high quality outcomes for our stakeholders.

SYA is made up of a team of highly experienced professionals from differing career backgrounds.

Among the team are tourism business consultants, retired teachers, aeronautic engineers, IT consultants and senior Government officials. Each has made significant contributions to various Sikh organisations and community groups over many years.

They continue to provide a voluntary service and have architected both the vision and aims of Sikh Youth Australia.

The current office holders of SYA include:

  • Satwant Singh Calais
  • Sukhvinder Singh
  • Jaswinder Singh Sidhu
  • Gurpreet Singh

SYA has been successfully running our annual summer youth camps for the past 12 years. The SYA summer youth camp is an opportunity to make new friends and have fun, while also having the ability to immerse in knowledge and understanding of Sikhism and be able to grow spiritually.

In 2005 Sikh Youth Australia initiated annual leadership camps for young Sikhs aged 18 years and above. The aim was to empower Sikh youths with leadership skills and qualities so they could progress in their chosen careers. The camps also enable them to work as teams, thus gaining a better understanding of how to form and maintain strong relationships with others. Today, these youths also act as advocates for a Sikh way of life. They have benefited from the camps by gaining a better understanding of their own goals and directions in life.
